Quite a few people hate Gnome 3, and rightfully so. It’s less intuitive, less customizable, and just generally sucks. Luckily for us that actually want to use our computers, a fork of Gnome 2, called the MATE Desktop Environment, has become available.
The author sums it up quite well: “MATE Desktop Environment, a non-intuitive and unattractive desktop for users, using traditional computing desktop metaphor. Also known as the GNOME2 fork.”
It was started in June by a user of Arch Linux, but has yet to gain much publicity. It is not available in most repositories and is mostly talked about on forums and blogs. This is to be expected, as this is a large undertaking for the author, who is probably strapped for time dealing with such a large application.
Check it out, and lend support to the contributors! There is still hope, thanks to the wonderful nature of open source.
Here on the Arch Linux Forums is the thread that started it all, and the project itself is hosted on GitHub.
