Apple’s Siri seems to have started a trend in the technology world, with the voice-recognition software headed for competition after the release of a new app that is in the pipeline for Google. The popular internet company is reportedly working on their own version of the software, however they have said that it will be a step ahead of Apple’s offering. Google is in the process of developing a voice-controlled application that will be known as ‘Assistant’. It will be used on Android devices and its aim will be to assist users. However, it will not just be another Siri-like application that will simply offer up information.
The role of Assistant will be to help its users to make decisions and accomplish their goals. If this is available on Android mobile phones, from O2 to any other network, then it would be very convenient for users. This app will allow users to conduct a goal-oriented search that will be voice-controlled and that has been referred to as a ‘do-engine’. While not much information is available at present, the assumption can be made that the Assistant will be extremely innovative. In order to be responsive to voice commands and questions, it will have to be very high-tech and intelligent.
It will be powered by Google’s search engine, the social network Google+ , as well as Google +1, and is being developed by the Android team. Android has already developed impressive voice recognition technology, with regards to entering data and searching the web. Now, it looks as though they are going one step further, with the development of this decision-making aid. Assistant is likely to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012, and it will be interesting to see the specific features and specifications that Google develops for this new app.
